What are docusate tablets or capsules?
DOCUSATE (Colace®, Surfak®) is an emollient laxative or stool softener that helps prevent constipation and straining or discomfort associated with hard or dry stools. Generic docusate capsules are available.
What should my health care professional know before I take docusate?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
- severe constipation
- an unusual or allergic reaction to docusate, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
- pregnant or trying to get pregnant
How should I take this medicine?
Take docusate tablets or capsules by mouth. Follow the directions on the label. Swallow the tablets or capsules with a drink of water. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. Do not take regularly for more than one week.

What side effects may I notice from taking docusate?

- diarrhea
- skin rash
- stomach cramps
- throat irritation
What should I watch for while taking docusate?
Do not use for more than one week without advice from your prescriber or health care professional. Long-term use can make your body depend on the laxative for regular bowel movements. If your constipation keeps returning, check with your prescriber or health care professional.
Always drink plenty of water while taking docusate, to help fight constipation.
Where can I keep my medicine?
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store at room temperature, approximately 25 °C (77 °F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
