What is calcium EDTA injection?

CALCIUM EDTA (Calcium Disodium Versenate^®) treats lead poisoning. Lead poisoning is especially serious in children because it can cause brain damage. Generic calcium EDTA injection is not yet available.

What should my health care professional know before I receive calcium EDTA?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• kidney disease or problems passing urine
• liver disease or inflammation of the liver
• an unusual or allergic reaction to calcium EDTA, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Calcium EDTA is for injection into a muscle or into a vein. It is given by a health-care professional in a hospital or clinic setting.

What if I miss a dose?

This does not apply.

What other medicines interact with calcium EDTA?

• insulin
• zinc salts

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from receiving calcium EDTA?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

• bloody or cloudy urine
• excessive, difficult, or painful urination
• fever, chills
• headache
• increased thirst
• irregular heartbeat
• joint pain
• loss of appetite
• nausea, vomiting
• skin rash, or sores
• stuffy nose, sneezing
• swollen and cracked lips
• tingling, numbness or pain in the hands or feet
• tiredness or weakness
• tremors
• urgent need to pass urine, especially at night
• watery eyes (tears)

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

• pain and burning at the injection site

What should I watch for while taking calcium EDTA?

Your condition will be monitored closely while you receive calcium EDTA. You must tell your prescriber or health care professional immediately if urine output stops for a period of 12 hours.

To make sure the treatment with calcium EDTA is effective, avoid vitamins or nutritional supplements containing zinc.

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 °C (59 and 86 °F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
