Generic Name Hydrocortisone, Neomycin, and Polymyxin Otic

What is hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension?

HYDROCORTISONE; NEOMYCIN; and POLYMYXIN B (AK-Spore HC®, Cortisporin®, Pediotic®, and others) is used to treat ear infections. Neomycin and polymyxin B are antibiotics that kill certain bacteria or stop their growth. Hydrocortisone reduces the inflammation caused by the infection. Generic hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension is available.

What should my health care professional know before I use hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • any other active infections
  • chronic ear infections (otitis media) or fluid in the ear
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to hydrocortisone, neomycin, polymyxin B, sulfites, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension is only for use in the ears. Wash your hands with soap and water. Clean your ear of any fluid that can be easily removed. Do not insert any object or swab into the ear canal. Gently warm the ear suspension bottle by holding it in the hand for 1—2 minutes. After cleaning your ear, lie down on your side with the infected ear up. If you are using the suspension, shake the bottle immediately before using. Try not to touch the tip of the dropper to your ear, fingertips, or other surface. Gently put the prescribed number of drops in the ear canal. Stay in this position for a few minutes to help the drops soak into the ear. Repeat the steps for the other ear if both ears are infected. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course of medicine prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension?

Do not use other ear products without consulting your prescriber or health care professional.

Tell your prescriber, pharmacist, or other health care professional about all other medications you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products; if you are a frequent user of caffeine or alcohol; if you smoke; or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from using hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • rash
  • red, itchy, dry scaly skin at the affected site
  • worsening ear pain

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • abnormal sensation in the ear
  • burning or stinging while putting the drops in the ear

What should I watch for while taking hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension?

If rash or allergic reaction occurs, stop the product immediately and contact your physician.

Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your ear infection does not get better in a few days. Do not use longer than 10 days unless instructed by your prescriber.

It is important that you keep the infected ear(s) clean and dry. When bathing, try not to get the infected ear(s) wet. Do not go swimming unless your prescriber or health care professional has told you otherwise.

To prevent the spread of infection, do not share ear products, or share towels and washcloths with anyone else. Throw away any unused ear suspension when you are done with your full course of treatment.

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children. Store at room temperature between 15 and 25 °C (59 and 77 °F). Avoid freezing. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
