What is Rasburicase injection?

RASBURICASE (Elitek™) works to lower high levels of uric acid in the blood. High levels of uric acid often occur after chemotherapy for certain types of cancer, like leukemia or lymphoma. Rasburicase helps prevent or treat high levels of uric acid during cancer treatments. Generic rasburicase injection is not yet available.

What should my health care professional know before I receive Rasburicase?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • G6PD deficiency
  • history of anemia
  • history of blood transfusion
  • an unusual reaction to rasburicase, yeast, mannitol, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How should this medicine be used?

Rasburicase is for infusion into a vein. A health-care professional will give this drug to you in a hospital or clinic setting.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. This drug is regularly used in children.

What if I miss a dose?

This does not apply. Your health care professional will watch your uric acid levels and give this treatment, usually once a day, for the amount of time needed.

What drug(s) may interact with Rasburicase?

  • allopurinol

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from receiving Rasburicase?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • chest pain
  • dizziness
  • fever
  • itching
  • rapid heart beat
  • skin rash or hives
  • trouble breathing

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • nausea
  • stomach pain

What should I watch for while taking Rasburicase?

Visit your health care professional for regular checks on your progress. You will need to have regular blood tests during your treatment. You will receive close monitoring during your treatments. This treatment is usually well-tolerated.

Where can I keep my medicine?

Rasburicase injection will be given to you in a clinic or hospital setting. You will not take this medicine at home.
