What are leucovorin tablets?

LEUCOVORIN (Wellcovorin®) helps to prevent or treat some of the harmful effects of certain medicines, including methotrexate. Leucovorin can also treat certain kinds of anemia (low blood counts). Generic leucovorin tablets are available.

What should my health care professional know before I take leucovorin?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • diarrhea
  • mouth sores (stomatitis or mucositis)
  • pernicious anemia or any other type of anemia
  • vitamin B12 deficiency
  • vomiting
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to leucovorin, folic acid, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How should I take this medicine?

Take leucovorin tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. It is very important to take this medicine exactly how it is prescribed. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice even if you feel better.

What if I miss a dose?

Try not to miss any doses. If you do forget to take a dose or if you vomit after taking a dose, call your prescriber or health care professional for advice as soon as you can. Do not take double or extra doses unless your prescriber or health care professional tells you to.

What drug(s) may interact with leucovorin?

  • barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures
  • phenytoin

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines that you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from taking leucovorin?

Leucovorin has few side effects; they include:

  • difficulty breathing
  • skin rash, or itching

What should I watch for while taking leucovorin?

Visit your prescriber or health care professional for regular checks on your progress. If you have nausea and vomit regularly talk to your prescriber or health care professional about the possibility of having injections of leucovorin instead of tablets. Do not stop taking leucovorin without your prescriber's advice.

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 25°C (59 and 77°F). Protect from light and moisture. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
