What are Carbetapentane; Guaifenesin extended release caplets?

CARBETAPENTANE; GUAIFENESIN (XPect-AT™) is used to decrease coughs and break up mucus in the lungs caused by colds or throat irritation. Carbetapentane helps to stop cough. Guaifenesin helps break up mucus in the lungs. This product is not intended to treat chronic cough caused by smoking, asthma, emphysema, heart failure, or problems in which there is a large amount of mucus.

What should my health care professional know before I receive Carbetapentane; Guaifenesin?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • asthma or other lung disease
  • chronic bronchitis
  • emphysema
  • heart failure
  • liver disease
  • seizures
  • stomach or intestinal problems
  • an unusual reaction to carbetapentane, guaifenesin, or other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How should this medicine be used?

Take the tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not chew, crush, or split the tablets. May take with food, water, or milk to minimize stomach upset. Drink plenty of water after taking your dose. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with Carbetapentane; Guaifenesin?

  • alcohol
  • barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
  • furazolidone
  • linezolid
  • medicines known as MAO inhibitors, such as phenelzine (Nardil®), tranylcypromine (Parnate®), isocarboxazid (Marplan®), and selegiline (Carbex®, Eldepryl®)
  • medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems, such as diazepam or temazepam
  • medicines for dizziness or motion sickness
  • medicines for hay fever and other allergies
  • medicines for mental depression
  • medicines for mental problems and psychotic disturbances
  • medicines for movement abnormalities as in Parkinson's disease
  • medicines for seizures
  • muscle relaxers
  • prescription pain medicines
  • procarbazine

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from receiving Carbetapentane; Guaifenesin?

Severe side effects from carbetapentane and guaifenesin are usually only seen in patients who have taken very high doses. Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • severe allergic reaction (i.e. difficulty breathing, wheezing)
  • fever or infection
  • kidney stone
  • seizures (convulsions)

Infants may get the following side effects:

  • temporarily stop breathing (apnea)
  • loss of muscle tone
  • seizures

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

rare or uncommon:

  • drowsiness, dizziness
  • headache
  • nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • rash
  • stomach upset

What should I watch for while taking Carbetapentane; Guaifenesin?

Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve in 1 or 2 days.

You may get drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how carbetapentane and guaifenesin affects you. Alcohol can increase the risk of getting drowsy, dizzy or confused. Avoid alcoholic drinks.

Drink plenty of water while taking carbetapentane and guaifenesin products. This will help loosen mucus.

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at controlled room temperature 15 and 30 °C (59 and 86 °F); do not freeze. Keep container tightly closed. Keep away from heat and light. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
