NIFEDIPINE in Adalat may interact with
Melatonin in MEL
Melatonin is considered a dietary supplement. It has been promoted for conditions such as cancer and insomnia as well as to delay the effects of aging; however, none of these claims have been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for safety or effectiveness. Although the cause of this potential interaction is not clearly understood, melatonin may counteract the blood pressure-lowering effect of nifedipine. When melatonin and nifedipine are taken at the same time, you may experience a loss of blood pressure control. Inform your doctor before taking nifedipine with melatonin or any other dietary or herbal supplement. If used together, your doctor may want to monitor you closely when therapy with melatonin is either started or stopped. If you are experiencing problems, it may be necessary to adjust the dose of nifedipine. Discuss this potential interaction with your healthcare provider at your next appointment, or sooner if you think you are having problems.
This interaction is poorly documented and is considered moderate in severity.
